For TV, composers create original music to accompany programmes. What’s called a musical ‘score’. Composers collaborate with Directors to translate their vision for the programme into music.

They write music that will guide the audience through the drama, increase its emotional impact and add atmosphere to the episode.
Screenwriters write the ‘screenplays’ from which films and television programmes are made.   Their responsibilities are researching the story, developing the plot and writing the script or ‘screenplay’. Screenplays include description of the action that takes place on camera and ‘dialogue’ - the lines the characters speak.

Runners literally run errands on set and are on hand to make sure everything runs smoothly; whether it’s making cups of tea or ensuring actors are on time for their make-up. Being a good organiser is essential for anyone wanting to do this job! Working as a Runner is one of the best ways to learn about the making of films and TV programmes.
Casting Directors work closely with the Director and Producer to find the ideal actor for each role. They arrange interviews with actors’ agents, carry out auditions and recommend the best actors and actresses for each role. The final list of actors filling the parts in a TV programme or film is called a ‘cast list’.

Directors are responsible for the quality of the final product. They shape the ‘dialogue’ and visual style of a production. Imagination and storytelling skills are essential as well as the ability to keep to deadlines. Examples of previous work are more important than formal or academic qualifications on a Director’s CV.
